RVotter Engine Upgrade: July 1999July 17, 1999 - At 856 hours, the original engine was swapped out. It was running fine, but it was time to install the new Real World Solutions gear reduction drive, and we decided we would do a tear down and inspection on the old engine. We'll post a full report on what we find when we do. The new engine (built for us by Bruce Turrentine) is an experiment to see if a turbo four port engine, with its cleaner ports, will equal the power of a 6 port engine when both are normally aspirated. Non-turbo rotors were used in order to keep the 9.7 : 1 compression ratio of the 1989 through 1991 engine. Below is a shot of the new engine prior to installation of the redrive:
Note the aluminum foil glued to the oil pan. This is to shield it from the heat radiated by the muffler, which will be mounted below it.
Here the installation is almost complete, including the new gear reduction drive. Just a few days after this picture was taken, the airplane was flown to Oshkosh & back, a 2200 mile trip. |
